The Senior Engineer’s Portfolio & GitHub in the AI Era: What Recruiters Actually See

The Senior Engineer’s Portfolio & GitHub in the AI Era: What Recruiters Actually See

By Yuliia Syvukha, Lead Recruiter at Olsys

Let’s be real: candidate searches and profile reviews in tech can feel a bit like a game of telephone right now.

On one side, engineers spend hours writing complex code, but often leave their public profiles minimal, outdated, or hard to navigate. On the other side, recruiters and hiring managers are swimming in hundreds of AI-generated profiles, trying to figure out where the actual engineering expertise lies.

When code generation is effortless, getting past the noise comes down to clarity.

I want to share a lighthearted, behind-the-scenes look at what recruiters actually see when we land on a candidate’s GitHub—along with a few easy ways to make your profile sell itself effortlessly.

1. The “Ghost Town” Profile vs. Clear Signal

  • The Recruiter’s Challenge: Opening a promising candidate’s GitHub only to find default project names like test-app-2, no README.md, or a commit heat map that hasn’t seen action since 2022. It leaves us guessing whether you’re still actively coding or what your actual stack looks like today.
  • How to make it sell you: You don’t need to post every day! Just pin 2–3 repositories that show your current tech stack. Add a 3-sentence README.md to each:
    1. What the project does.
    2. The tech stack used.
    3. How to run it or view a quick demo.

2. The “Tutorial Overload” Dilemma

  • The Recruiter’s Challenge: Seeing 15 repositories of standard to-do lists, weather apps, or direct tutorial clones. In the AI era, anyone can prompt an LLM to scaffold a CRUD app in 30 seconds, so it’s hard for us to spot your real senior capability.
  • How to make it sell you: Quality over quantity, always. Unpin or archive incomplete tutorial repos. Highlight projects where you solved a real problem, handled complex data, or integrated third-party APIs. Showing one solid, well-documented project beats ten half-finished tutorial clones every time.

3. The “Silent Codebase” (Where’s the Why?)

  • The Recruiter’s Challenge: Looking at clean, working code with zero context. We can see how it was written, but we can’t see why you built it that way—making it hard to assess your senior-level architectural thinking.
  • How to make it sell you: Use your README.md to show off your decision-making! Add a tiny “Tech Decisions & Trade-offs” section:
    • Why did you choose PostgreSQL over MongoDB?
    • How did you handle error logging or state management?
  • Explaining your reasoning instantly signals high technical maturity to recruiters and engineering managers alike.

4. The Single “Initial Commit” Mystery

  • The Recruiter’s Challenge: Finding a massive 2,000-line codebase uploaded in a single commit labeled “initial commit”. In the age of AI code dumps, this makes it tricky to see your actual development process and discipline.
  • How to make it sell you: Keep your commit history natural. Small, incremental commits with clear messages show how you break down problems step-by-step and collaborate with a team.

The 10-Minute GitHub Profile Upgrade Checklist

If you want your profile to stand out without spending hours on it:

  1. Create a GitHub Profile README: Add a quick intro repo (named after your username) with your current role, primary tech stack, and what you’re currently building or learning.
  2. Pin your top 3 repos: Give us your best work right at the top.
  3. Add a quick architecture sketch: A simple diagram or list of system components makes complex projects instantly understandable.
  4. Link your LinkedIn/Contact info: Make sure recruiters know where to reach you if a great opportunity comes along.
